Pastured Poultry at the 2nd St. Chicken Ranch

June 17, 2012 By Candace Godwin 2 Comments

I had an interesting and enlightening (albeit short) interaction with a potential customer at Farmer’s Market last Wednesday about the 2nd St. Chicken Ranch eggs.  The customer wanted to know if the eggs were from “free range” chickens.  A valid enough question.  I said no, they lived in a coop with pen…and she walked away.  I was a little stunned…

We will be participating at as many Wednesday afternoon markets as possible in downtown Coeur d’Alene — beginning on Wednesday, June 13. We’ll have our heirloom tomato plants for…

The chive blossoms at the 2nd St. Chicken Ranch are outstanding this year.  I have several clumps of chives that have been divided multiple times over the years – they just keep getting better and better. I love the subtle onion-y taste of spring chives and use the blossoms as much as possible to dress up everything from potato salad…

What is she up to now? Germination testing, of course! I saved quite a few seeds this summer, and I want to ensure they are viable for next season. I'd say this is a yes! If you saved garden seeds this year or acquired some from friends, it's a good idea to run a quick Germination test. It's better to know now than be disappointed in spring. You can sow in seed starting mix, as I have done here, or place seeds in damp paper towels inside a baggie. And no, as much as I would like to, these seedlings will not be grown out - they're headed to the compost bin. 🫤#thecoeurdalenecoop #seedtesting #germinationtest #planningforspring ...
