Are You Ready for a Backyard Flock? A Primer for Backyard Chickens It’s undeniable that baby chicks are adorable…and hard to resist. This time of year, the local feed stores are bursting with little biddies–“Chick Days”–is what they call it. Before you succumb to their $1.99 chick special and walk out with an entire flock of fuzz-balls, consider the Chick Primer…

Verigated Cat Grass | The Coeur d'Alene Coop

March 2, 2014 By Candace Godwin Leave a Comment

My Fickle Friend — March March came in like a lion in north Idaho. Our overnight temperatures dipped into the single digits, and windchill forced minus figures. As I write, it’s a balmy 16 degrees with blizzard-like conditions blowing outside the window. You know it’s cold when the chicken-girls won’t leave the coop (and who could blame them?) A friend…

Heirloom Tomato Plants for Sale | The Coeur d'Alene Coop

February 23, 2014 By Candace Godwin 2 Comments

The 2014 Heirloom Plant Line-Up is Posted! As I write this, old man Winter still has a tight grip on us — more than 6 inches of snow has once again blanketed the garden. Yet, his icy grip will slowly loosen as the days lengthen, and we slip and slide ever closer to glorious spring (less than 30 days away…

Seed Packets | The Coeur d'Alene Coop

What is she up to now? Germination testing, of course! I saved quite a few seeds this summer, and I want to ensure they are viable for next season. I'd say this is a yes! If you saved garden seeds this year or acquired some from friends, it's a good idea to run a quick Germination test. It's better to know now than be disappointed in spring. You can sow in seed starting mix, as I have done here, or place seeds in damp paper towels inside a baggie. And no, as much as I would like to, these seedlings will not be grown out - they're headed to the compost bin. 🫤#thecoeurdalenecoop #seedtesting #germinationtest #planningforspring ...
