Is it time to harvest the garlic? We're getting cl Is it time to harvest the garlic? We're getting close, but I'm going to wait another week. 🧄

Why?

👉 First, garlic is ready to harvest when you have 4 to 5 brown leaves on the bottom, but still green leaves on top.

Upon inspection, most of my garlic has 3 to 4 brown leaves. We are close.

I dug a couple; the size looks good, but I'm going to give the plants a few more days. Each leaf represents a wrapper, which protects the bulb, and you want several layers of wrappers.

The one thing you want to do is harvest BEFORE the entire plant turns brown. You risk having the wrappers split in the soil, which leads to disease and very poor storage. ☹️

Not sure? Count your lower brown leaves... 3 or less wait. 5 or more it's ready. Remember, different varieties will mature at different times, too.
