March 17, 2012 By Candace Godwin Leave a Comment

Spring officially arrives on Tuesday, March 20th and the Second Street Chicken Ranch has been busy preparing for the arrival of the 2012 gardening season. With the mild temperatures of late, I’ve been able to get out and inspect the raised beds and remove much of the thick straw blanket that was keeping carrots, garlic, kale, cress and spinach cozy…

The following bit of photojournalism captures the daily activity inside the Coeur d’Alene Coop.  Madge is quite the attraction to the younger girls when she in on the nest.  I wish I could have recorded the “chicken purring” that occurred during this session!   Who knew chicken’s crowd-sourced this daily hen-house activity? Who says you can't grow big beefsteaks in North Idaho? Witness Potato Leaf Yellow, (seeds from Epic Tomato man and friend, Craig LeHoullier Craig LeHoullier ), planted in late May, harvested this beauty on August 22. My second year growing this variety and once again, it is a winner with more fruit hanging on the vine. Weighing in at 1 pound 9 ounces, every ounce is sweet and delicious. What a 🥓🥬🍅 she is going to make!Put this tomato on your list for next year's garden. Plants exclusively from The Coop. 🍅#thecoeurdalenecoop#potatoleafyellowtomato#blt#heirloomtomatoes#tomatolover ...
