Mid September finds most north Idaho gardeners busy bringing in the last of the tomatoes, cukes and summer squashes.  A late summer heat wave earlier this month really helped those heat seekers move along to luscious ripeness and the bounty is rolling in at the Second Street Chicken Ranch. But I’m antsy…my summer crops are still going strong.  Why, you…

One of the few benefits to a cool, wet summer is how great the cool weather crops grow. Okay, I’m inclined to say this is the only benefit to a cooler than normal summer. Nonetheless, if you love harvesting fresh peas, non-bitter or bolting lettuce and arugula into August, this has been your kind of summer in north Idaho. The…

Over the weekend we moved our 16-week old pullets into the main coop with our two older hens.  I’m happy to report it was a great success with no bloodshed, no loss of feathers or any real discomfort for anyone (especially me).  Amazing.  I’m crediting this successful flock integration to the “meet and greets” and other factors mentioned previously.  Combining…

Who says you can't grow big beefsteaks in North Idaho? Witness Potato Leaf Yellow, (seeds from Epic Tomato man and friend, Craig LeHoullier Craig LeHoullier ), planted in late May, harvested this beauty on August 22. My second year growing this variety and once again, it is a winner with more fruit hanging on the vine. Weighing in at 1 pound 9 ounces, every ounce is sweet and delicious. What a 🥓🥬🍅 she is going to make!Put this tomato on your list for next year's garden. Plants exclusively from The Coop. 🍅#thecoeurdalenecoop#potatoleafyellowtomato#blt#heirloomtomatoes#tomatolover ...
