January 15, 2021 By Candace Godwin Leave a Comment

“Anyone who thinks gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year; for gardening begins in January with a dream.”  — Josephine Nuese A cold, gray day. A cup of tea. My garden journal and stack of seed catalogs. It’s everything I need to start planning my garden for the…

Baked tomato tart

August 27, 2020 By Candace Godwin Leave a Comment

It’s definitely tomato-time! The vines at the 2nd Street Chicken Ranch are heavy with tomatoes — of all sizes and colors. One of my favorite ways to use these heirloom beauties is in this simple, but delicious tomato tart.   I say simple, because it really is — just a few fresh ingredients, a puff-pastry sheet and a quick 30-minutes…

Beans for seed saving

June 19, 2020 By Candace Godwin 3 Comments

Note: This post was updated in September 2021. With the garden planted, I’m eagerly awaiting the fruits of my labor:  the first tiny, pea-sized tomato, a wisp of a bean, a green button of a pepper. Still, we’ve experienced a couple of cooler than usual nights recently – some places saw temperatures in…

The winter-sown lupine was a success this year. These are Russell's, a multi-colored mix. I managed to pot up 30 seedlings. I'll let these grow on a bit before potting them up again. Depending on how they grow, I'll either plant them in the late spring or hold them until fall. I ❤️ lupines.#thecoeurdalenecoop #wintersownflowers #lovelylupine #perennialflowers#lupinelove ...
